Thomas Maddock (& Sons). / Thomas Maddock's Son's Company
Trenton, New Jersey, United States.
Hersteller / Manufacturer
Thomas (1818-1899) was born into a Burslem, Staffordshire, England family of potters. He and his family came to New York City in 1847 where he established a china decorating shop, the first of its kind in the U.S. He had two sons with his first wife. One died at an early age and his son John later founded John Maddock and Sons. With his second wife he had three daughters and three sons (Charles S. 1852-1933, Archibald M. 1856-1910 and Harry S. 1861-1914). Thomas formed a partnership in Trenton that produced toilet sets. Thomas was interested in sanitary ware as "water closets" started making their way into houses.  Thomas and his three sons by his second wife took over the company and renamed it Thomas Maddock and Sons. When Thomas died in 1899, his sons renamed it Thomas Maddock's Sons Co. although for some reason the apostrophe does not appear on the mark on the football stein. The firm name as Thomas Maddock's Son's Co. has also been seen. At one time Trenton led the nation in the production of sanitary wares. The company suffered hard times in the 1920s and was forced to sell to American Standard in 1929.
