The company was founded in 1853 as Straub & Schweizer. It became Straub & Sohn in 1866. They merged with A. Ritter & Co. in 1880 to form Württembergische MetallwarenFabrik. They expanded the company, purchasing Orovit A.G. in 1905, employing 6000 people at their peak. The head of the design studio was the sculptor Albert Mayer, whilst Hans Peter designed for the firm as an independent. Most  designs were created by anonymous factory employees.
