She was born Elfriede Kopp in Berdorf am Rhein, Luxembourg in 1904 and her surname changed to Balzar-Kopp upon marriage circa 1927. Meanwhile between 1924 & 1926 she attended the State School of Ceramics, Höhr, under H. Bollenbach, E. Berdel & A. Kamp, passing her final examinations. During this period she met Wim Mühlendyck, with whom she collaborated during most of her career. During 1926-27 her first job was at the Staatsliche Majolica Manufactory in Karlsruhe. In 1927 she opened her own workshop in Höhr, the town known after 1936, as Höhr-Grenzhausen. Her art pottery became a G.m.b.H in 1930. She took and passed her Masters exam in 1937, It is believed she retired in 1973 and subsequently died Höhr-Grenzhausen in 1983.
