Elfenbeinschnitzerei, sowie Porzellan- und Glasmalerei / Ivory carvers, as well as porcelain & glass decorators.
Founded c.1858/59 by Johann Werner at Östliche Hauptstrasse 33. His business was centred around ivory carving.  Around 1878 due to renumbering, the address changed to Hauptstrasse 163, although he stayed in the same shop! In 1886 Johann retired and the business was inherited by his son, Karl . Gradually they widened their product range to include carving of amber and Meerschaum for pipe smokers, plus a coat of arms decoration service in their glassware centre. As well as being an arts and crafts workshop, they covered a wide range of luxury goods as well. In 1905 Karl changed his name in the directories to Carl. Circa 1914, Carl retired and the business continued in his name, but with his son, Hans as proprietor. Again, they majored on ivory carving and still supplied the fraternities with decorated steins. Around 1924-1926 they opened a short-lived branch in Leopoldstraße (Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage). Carl died around 1929. With the closure of the fraternities plus the lack of ivory supplies after 1939, they became a general luxury goods store. Little is known about their post-war history, other than I understand they are still in business today with a store in the suburbs of Heidelberg .
